The Legacy

July 17, 1862

The Second Confiscation Act and Militia Act allowed Black men to serve in the Union Army, laying the foundation for diverse regiments.

January 1, 1863

The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states legally free. However, freedom was not immediately enforced in many areas, including Texas and Indian Territory.

July 17, 1863

The Battle of Honey Springs was fought just south of present-day Bartlesville. This Union victory, led by Black, Native American, and white soldiers, weakened Confederate control in the region.

April 9, 1865

The Civil War effectively ended, making enforcement of emancipation possible across the South.

June 19, 1865

Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing that enslaved people were free. This day became known as Juneteenth.

July 19, 1866

Slavery was officially abolished in Indian Territory through new federal treaties, marking the full enforcement of freedom in what is now Oklahoma.

After 1866

Freed families began building independent communities. Using provisions made possible by the Homestead Act of 1862, many acquired land and established more than 50 Black towns across Oklahoma.

Early 1900s

Juneteenth celebrations expanded into large community gatherings centered around food, music, faith, and reflection—bringing people together across cultures.

June 17, 2021

Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.

Today

Juneteenth is more than a date. It is a story of freedom unfolding over time.

Here in Oklahoma, that story includes the Battle of Honey Springs—a moment where people from different backgrounds stood together in pursuit of something greater.

This is why Juneteenth belongs to everyone.

It is a celebration of freedom realized, community built, and the ongoing work of moving forward—together.
